Why We Buy Art: Three Artists I’ve Personally Invested In
Share
Buying art is a deeply personal choice. Maybe you connect with an artist’s story. Perhaps you love a specific technique. Often, you just feel something unique when you look at a piece of art. All of these reasons are valid.
Building a personal art collection takes time. It is about finding pieces that turn a house into a home. While I would love for you to consider one of my own original pieces, I want to share the journey of my own collection. Here are three artists I have invested in over the years and why their art resonates with me.
Toni Thornton: Abstract Art, Peace and Inspiration

I first discovered Toni Thornton on Instagram during the Covid pandemic. I was immediately drawn to her signature abstract style. Her work often features a timeless, neutral palette. I loved the raw expression in her visible brushstrokes.
At the time, I had recently bought my own flat. I wanted art that felt meaningful. I needed pieces that suited my specific decor. In January 2021, Toni launched her Land and Sea Collection. I connected with it instantly.
I love abstraction, but this felt different. You could clearly see the rocky shore and the lapping waves. Looking at it gave me a sense of total peace. I purchased a limited edition print titled, Silent Shore, for my home office.
When we moved house, it took pride of place above the fireplace. It has since moved to the adjacent wall. That spot is now reserved for my own current piece, “There’s Hope on the Horizon.” But I still look at it fondly on a daily basis.
Following Toni actually changed my life. She inspired me to pick up a paintbrush again after ~15 years. She has been so helpful during my journey to start this business. It was a wonderful investment in every sense.

David Downton: High-Fashion Elegance with a Royal Connection

My husband and I have wonderful memories of London’s iconic Claridge's Hotel. One of our first official dates was afternoon tea there. Years later, it was our wedding venue. Everytime we go, I feel so special. The staff are amazing, every inch of it is photo worthy.
As many of you know, my husband serves in the military. Because of this, he wanted a portrait of the reigning monarch in our home. He had an old picture of the Queen, but it didn't fit my aesthetic. I wanted something more contemporary.
If you visit Claridge’s, the halls feature incredible portraits by David Downton. He captures notable guests with amazing minimalism. Around the time of our wedding, the Queen passed away. Her Downton portrait was displayed in the hotel lobby.
I loved the style. It was elegant, chic, and storied. After the wedding, I tracked down a limited edition print. My husband was happy to have the Queen on the wall. I was happy because the style was beautiful.
While this specific print may no longer be available, his portfolio of fashion illustrations is a masterclass in minimalist elegance.

Sherin Aminossehe: Meaningful Architectural Art

In 2023, a family friend was involved in a charity auction. She asked me to share the event on my social media. While browsing the auction items, I discovered the work of Sherin Aminossehe.
Sherin creates beautiful, highly detailed architectural drawings. Her portfolio is truly impressive. My friend owned a few pieces, including a drawing of her own wedding venue.
Our first wedding anniversary was approaching. Since the first year is the "paper" anniversary, it felt like fate. I bid early on a commission piece. Sadly, I was outbid at the very last second!
However, I reached out to Sherin directly. I asked to commission a private piece of our venue. I absolutely love the result. I walk past it every day. It is a constant reminder of our special day.
Beyond her talent, Sherin is a beautiful soul. She requested that all payment be made directly to SSAFA, The Armed Forces Charity. Supporting a great cause while gaining a family heirloom was a joy.

The Joy of a Growing Art Collection
There are so many more artists who inspire me. These three currently sit in my home alongside my own work. Seeing them together reminds me why I create art in the first place.
Art should evoke a memory or a feeling. It should make your space feel complete. If you are looking for your next investment, view my available original paintings here, before I'm tempted to keep them all for myself!
